Ordering Swimming Pool LED Strip Lights — Professional Guide
Applicable for swimming pools, spas, water features, hot tubs, fountains, and all underwater LED lighting projects.
After supporting numerous hotel pools, luxury villas, commercial swimming pools, and landscape projects, we noticed one common issue:
Most project delays, rework, and inaccurate budgets stem from insufficient information during the early planning stage.
Typical problems include:
- Multiple back-and-forth discussions without reaching final specifications
- Lights unable to be installed on-site or cables not long enough
- Lighting systems are incompatible with the control system
- Budget overruns and delivery delays
To help you avoid these issues, we created the most comprehensive and practical LED Pool Light Pre-Selection Guide in the industry.
By preparing the following 9 key details, your project will benefit from:
- Accurate quotations
- Clear production timelines
- Smooth installation
- A safer, more reliable lighting system
9 Key Information You Must Confirm Before Ordering Swimming Pool LED Strip Lights
1. Installation Location: Underwater or Above Water? Maximum Depth?
Please confirm:
- Will the light be installed underwater or above water (pool wall, steps, landscape edge, etc.)?
- For underwater installations, what is the maximum depth?
Our pool lights are designed for depths up to 2 meters (6.6 ft).
Why It Matters
- Greater depth → higher water pressure → stricter requirements on housing and sealing
- Exceeding the rated depth may cause water ingress and reduce product lifespan
- Depth installation affects mounting method and control system planning
2. Installation Method: Surface-Mounted or Recessed / Niche-Mounted?
Please provide:
- Installation method:
- Surface Mount
- Recessed / Niche Mount
- Construction drawings or site photos
- For renovation projects: photos of existing fixtures and niche dimensions
Why It Matters
- Each installation method requires different fixture structures and brackets
- Incorrect information may result in:
- Light not fitting
- Bracket mismatches
- Pool lights are one-piece sealed units — they cannot be modified on-site
3. Light Length, Shape & Bending Direction (Top Bend / Side Bend)
Flexible pool LED lights are ideal for curves, arcs, and custom shapes. However, the bending direction is critical.
Please provide:
- Exact length of each light
- Routing shape: straight / curved / circular
- Drawings or layout plans
- Bending direction: Top Bend (vertical) or Side Bend (horizontal)
Why It Matters
- Incorrect bending direction → the light cannot bend properly or may get damaged
- Incorrect length → cannot be installed or affect lighting uniformity
- Tight curves may require a jumper (as short as 4")
4. Light Color Options: Single Color / RGB / RGBW
Available options:
- Single Color (white, warm white, blue, red, etc.)
- RGB
- RGBW (RGB + dedicated white channel for premium lighting)
Why It Matters
Color selection affects:
- Internal structure
- Wiring configuration
- Control complexity
- System cost
Recommendation:
RGBW produces a cleaner, more accurate white compared to RGB-mixed white—ideal for luxury pools.
5. Cable Length & Position of Power Supply / Control Box
Please confirm:
- Actual distance from each light to the power supply / control box / junction box
- Installation location of power supplies and controllers
- Whether extra maintenance cable length is required
Why It Matters
- Underwater cables cannot be randomly extended — high water-ingress risk
- Cable too long → voltage drop → “bright front, dim back”
- RGB / RGBW signals may weaken over long distances
- The waterproof cable gland must not be cut off
6. Control System: Switch? Remote? DMX? Zones?
Please provide:
- Preferred control method
- On/Off switch
- Remote control
- DMX control
- Whether zoning is required (main pool, kids’ pool, spa, fountain, etc.)
- Number of lights each control system will operate
Why It Matters
The control method affects:
- Wiring method
- Controller specification
- Electrical planning complexity
Commercial pools often require zone control for multi-scene requirements.
7. Electrical Parameters: Voltage, Power & Power Distribution
You only need to provide:
- Length of each light
- Total length (if applicable)
We will calculate:
- Power consumption per strip
- Total system power
- Required number of power supplies
- Whether power zoning is needed
8. Maintenance & Service Accessibility
Please confirm:
- Are the fixtures easy to remove for future service?
- Is there sufficient space to access controllers and power supplies?
Why It Matters
If maintenance access is not planned, future repairs may require draining the pool — extremely costly.
Proper planning reduces long-term operational costs.
9. Project Budget & Delivery Timeline
Please confirm:
- Project budget range
- Required completion date or opening deadline
Why It Matters
- Determines recommended system level
- Helps plan production scheduling
- Prevents avoidable project delays
