What is the difference between wall washing and wall grazing?

Wall washing involves spreading light evenly over a wall, making it appear clear, bright, and free of shadows. This enhances the wall's architecture and creates a feeling of spaciousness. A flat, smooth wall surface is ideal for wall washing to minimize shadowing. For optimal wall washing, lights are typically placed at the ceiling level and more than 1ft (preferably 2-3 ft) away from the wall to allow the light to spread at a wider angle. The lights should be aimed towards the center of the focus, such as a piece of art or architectural feature, and positioned at eye level. Angle-adjustable lights are recommended for wall washing lighting.

Wall grazing, unlike wall washing, is a lighting technique used to enhance the texture of vertical surfaces by emphasizing shadows. By shining light just above textured surfaces, wall grazing creates distinctive shadows, giving walls a more dramatic appearance. To perform wall grazing, the lights should be positioned closer (typically less than 1ft) to a textured wall (bricks, woods, or stones) and can even be mounted on the ground for an uplighting effect. The intensity of the shadows can be adjusted by moving the lights closer or farther from the wall. Angle-adjustable lights are recommended for wall grazing lighting.
