How much amount of light and what level of brightness do you need?

A proper level of lighting plays a critical role in enabling us to accomplish tasks more efficiently and safely in our workplaces and in aiding the comfort of our homes. Bulbs are not only for lighting but also for comfort and efficiency.

BUY LUMENS, NOT WATTS: Buying 21st Century Lighting

For as long as most of us have ever known, we have been buying light bulbs simply based on how much energy they consume (Watts) not how much light they give (Lumens). When you’re shopping for your next light bulb, be sure to compare lumens instead of watts.

WHAT IS A LUMEN?

The lumen (denoted by lm) is defined as “the SI derived unit of luminous flux, a measure of the total quantity of visible light emitted by a source.” Lumens equal how much light a bulb is emitting, but watts do not. In short, lumens are what you see while watts are what you pay for. More lumens means more/brighter light, and vice versa.

HOW MANY LUMENS DO YOU NEED? (More Lumens = More Light)

There is no exact answer – it will depend on several factors, such as room size and shape, the height of ceilings, task areas and needs of the user, etc. Here’s a rule of thumb:
